The scientific and professional monograph PROTECTION OF WRITTEN HERITAGE – Theoretical Concepts and Practical Aspects of Protection Management in the Context of Archives by Iva Gobić Vitolović and Damir Hasenay is a unique combination of the theory and practice of managing the protection of written heritage in the context of archives, although the strategies, methods and protection activities are actually common and applicable in all information (heritage) institutions: Archives, Libraries and Museums.

The first part, entitled Theoretical Concepts of Systematic Protection of Written Heritage in the Context of Archives , presents the basic concepts, concepts and policies in the field of written heritage protection, explains their meaning and shows their mutual relationships. The second part, entitled Practical Aspects of Systematic Protection of Written Heritage on the Example of the State Archives in Rijeka , provides detailed information on a case study of a systematic approach to managing the protection of archival materials by implementing theoretical knowledge into the practice of the Rijeka archives. The aim of the first part is to briefly provide a theoretical context for the empirical-practical topic of the second part of the publication, while at the same time pointing out the complexity of the issue of written heritage protection in the context of archives and the possible gap between theory and practice due to the uniqueness of each heritage institution with its associated materials, employees, users, infrastructure, etc.

The publication is based on contemporary theory and practice in the field of protection of written heritage, referring to relevant professional literature and online sources, as well as to valid laws, regulations, guidelines and recommendations for the implementation of protection, i.e. to the international, national, regional and institutional framework.

The book is intended for anyone who wants to learn something about the protection of written heritage, regardless of their level of prior knowledge of this issue. The presented content can also be used by subject matter experts, primarily conservators – restorers, archivists, librarians, curators and all stakeholders who come into contact with this issue, but also by the academic community, as a source of basic and in some segments advanced knowledge in this area. The first, theoretical part can also serve as a kind of university textbook for all courses that address protection processes, and the second, practical, as a guide for professionals in implementing systematic protection procedures on specific heritage holdings.
