Vegetable tanned leather

One of the oldest methods of leather tanning is the tanning of animal skins using tannins from wood, better known as vegetable tanning. This method of tanning hides from small cattle and wild animals has not changed since ancient times. Tannins obtained from spruce bark and from chestnut and oak wood are used in tanning. Vegetable tanned leathers have a higher density and toughness compared to other traditionally tanned leathers, but at the same time retain their natural softness. Thanks to the mentioned characteristics, these leathers are often used in bookbinding. Skin oiling is done with natural fats and oils such as fish oil, vegetable fats and fat from beef hoofs. Vegetable-tanned leathers are completely handmade and do not contain salts, acids or chromium compounds.

  • Finished leathers have an area of 50-80 dm 2 and are sold whole

  • II. class-leathers have beautiful and full “face”, with minor irregularities and defects, most often on the outer edges

Unlike vegetable-tanned leather, mineral-tanned leather is treated with aluminum salts and produced according to a recipe from the 16th century. century. This recipe contains the oldest known set of instructions for mineral leather tanning in the world. When tanning, mineral tanning and fat tanning are combined. Only natural materials are used in the process: alum (potassium aluminum sulfate), table salt, wheat flour, egg yolk and olive oil. Washing is done using ash or lime.
